When shopping for your next fountain pen, knowing the differences between models can make all the difference. At Esterbrook, we offer a curated range of writing instruments that blend classic design with modern functionality. In this guide, we’ll break down the differences between our three signature models: the Estie, the Model J, and the JR.

Estie: Vintage-Inspired, Modern Made
The Estie (short for Esterbrook) is our flagship model and a bestseller among collectors and everyday writers alike. Designed to pay homage to the classic 1950s aesthetic, the Estie features a comfortably weighted acrylic body and sleek profile that’s both timeless and contemporary.
Offered in a variety of limited and core colorways—from the richly marbled Sea Glass to our elegant Nouveau Bleu—the Estie is as much a statement piece as it is a writing tool. It comes in standard and oversized versions and offers two filling options: cartridge/converter or button piston (available on select models). The Estie is also compatible with our proprietary MV Nib Adaptor, allowing users to fit vintage Esterbrook nibs into modern barrels.
Model J: The Return of a Legend
The original Model J was introduced in the 1940s and quickly became one of the most beloved American pens of the 20th century. We’ve brought it back—updated for today but with the same silhouette and spirit. The newly reimagined Model J keeps the cigar-shaped profile and the vintage flair, but with a more refined resin and modern filling system.
The Model J is perfect for fans of classic design who want a pen that feels rooted in history but performs with present-day precision. It’s available in core colors as well as special edition releases. Like the Estie, it takes a cartridge/converter and is fitted with a smooth German-made nib.

JR Pocket Pen: Small in Size, Big on Personality
The JR is a revival of our “J Reborn” line, combining the compact portability of a pocket pen with the writing comfort of a full-sized nib. Its shorter barrel makes it ideal for everyday carry, while the screw-cap ensures your nib stays protected when not in use.
With colors ranging from classic black to whimsical hues like Palm Green and Twinkle, the JR is a favorite for those who want to travel light without sacrificing performance. It accepts international short cartridges and converters, making it a versatile choice for anyone on the go.
Which Esterbrook Is Right for You?
Choosing between the Estie, Model J, and JR comes down to your preferences in size, weight, and filling system. Whether you’re building your first collection or looking for a new daily writer, there’s an Esterbrook pen designed for your lifestyle.
