”I have been an interior decorator for almost 30 years. I didn’t start with this career arc. I worked 10 years in Texas in printing and paper sales and hated every minute of it. Finally I got fired out of that industry and with the help of a wonderful friend made the decision to leave Texas and move to New York City to find work I could love. That was my only goal. I didn’t have to be a captain of industry or a CEO….. anything in the world as long as I loved it. I tried a few things that didn’t show promise and finally I was hired by a well-known New York interior designer as his chauffeur. If I enjoyed being a chauffeur then so be it, but I had also always been curious about interior design. Yes, I was the kid that rearranged furniture at home in the middle of the night. I hated being a chauffeur but I had become fast friends with the associate designer of that firm and we left together to start our own business. Eleven years later after being a partner in the firm I started my own design business which I named after my own moniker, as my dad had thought it would be a great name for a baseball player. I can’t throw a ball but I know how to create beautiful rooms and so I’ve become John Douglas Easton Interiors. There have been plenty of ups and downs in the last 30 years, but I’ve never finished a workday where I’ve said ‘that was a boring day’. Each day is interesting, each day is different from the last and at some point in every day I’m aware that I’m doing something that I love. Goal accomplished!”
